Chipstead Valley - Surrey - Private Weather Station

 

CHIPSTEAD Valley was colder than Russia on Saturday 11/Feb/12  when the temperature slumped to a record-breaking -18.4C (-1F).The reading, taken on Saturday morning by the Croydon Advertiser's weatherman Ian Currie was, by a decimal point, the coldest in the UK.

Mr Currie, 61, of Rickman Hill, Coulsdon, said: "It was so cold my breath was turning to ice crystals on my scarf. As I was taking the reading, my fingers went numb within moments."A similar reading of -18.3C taken at a weather station in Chesham, Bucks.

Situated in a frost hollow, it is not unusual for Katesbridge to record overnight minimum temperatures of -1c in June and 0c in July and August..

Altnaharra (Sutherland) - Scotland - Met Office Weather Station

 

Altnaharra weather station: When there is a southwest wind, the Föhn effect can raise temperatures here on the lee of high ground - the hills cause water to condense which heats the atmosphere along with warming due to the pressure rising on descent. More frequently though this is the mother of all frost hollows, frequently recording temperatures below -20°C and is joint holder of the Scottish (and Great Britain) record for lowest recorded temperature, -27.2°C.

On July 1st. 2009, following the closure of the Met Office station in nearby Grantown on Spey, Cromdale became an official Met Office Climate station following the installation of approved recording equipment, comprising of  thermometers mounted within a traditional Stevenson screen, a grass-minimum thermometer, and a 5” stainless steel rain-gauge. Measurements are taken daily at 0900 UTC/GMT for submission
 to the Met Office.
